Festive activity at Ravensdale Lodge

| January 1, 2013

The Bumper Christmas Show at Ravensdale Lodge on Saturday 29th December certainly lived up to its billing as a “bumper” crowd flocked to the popular north Louth venue. They travelled from as far afield as Letterkenny in Donegal to the north and Dublin to the south to compete at the annual Christmas show at the centre. The incentives being a great day of fun filled competition, free flowing jumping courses and of course the superb prizes which were on offer from many of the regular sponsors at Ravensdale Lodge. The action kicked off with the popular X poles class which attracts many of the potential future superstars of the sport. A regular visitor at Ravensdale Lodge, Dale Clarke from Ardglass Co. Down took first place in this and the following 60cm class with his own Beauty in the practically identical times of 40.04 seconds and 40.13 seconds respectively. Second in the class was Jason Connolly from Ravensdale who came home clear on Dynamite in a time of 44.17 seconds, third place went to Annie Courtney Cadam, daughter of top producer and show jumper Linda, on her own Pugsy in a time of 47.43 seconds. Two more Connolly’s filled fourth and fifth places with five year old Rosalyn putting in a fine display on the centre’s Duffy while her year older sister Eve, also riding Duffy had to be content with fifth place. Holly Carville riding her own Blaze filled sixth place in the class. Second to Clarke in the 60cm class was June Ellenberg from Armagh with her promising new horse Top Notch in the slightly slower time of 40.37 seconds. Jason Connolly finished third in this class, this time on his own Browno, their time 44.66 seconds. Fourth place in the 60cm class went to Carlingford rider Leanne Finnegan on board Ravensdale O’ Gara while fifth place went to Annie Courtney Cadam with Pugsy and another Carlingford rider, this time Ellie Hughes slotted into sixth with one of her young horses Phantom.

As with the first two classes the next two, the 70cm and 80cm were both won by the same rider, this time it was Sophie Price with Sweet William and Tommy Zoom respectively. Sophie and Sweet William stopped the clock on 34.84 seconds to win the 70cm class, 39. 78 seconds was good enough for second in the class for Jordan Mc Garrell with Patient Lady while Megan Hughes of sponsors Horse First came home third on Tino Rossi in a time of 43.53 seconds. Regular rider at Ravensdale Lodge, Georgia Kirkwood from Lisburn slotted into fourth place with her own Maddie while the brothers Robert and Jack Jones from Carrickmacross Co,. Monaghan filled fifth and sixth places respectively, Robert with Twilight Twinkle and Jack with Spotty. Second to Sophie Price in the 80cm class was another Sophie, this time Sophie Kinghan with Rocky in a time of 42.83 seconds while Jack Jones with Spotty finished three places higher in this class to come home third in a time of 49.30 seconds. The minor places were filled by Roslyn Brown with Cindy in fourth, Fabulux with Erin Mc Cullagh in fifth and Rebecca Kieran with Ella in sixth. The feature class of the day was up next, the Ravensdale Lodge Christmas Derby which was set at 85cm. A large entry took on the track and unlike all the other classes the Derby class was timed from the start of the course. Banbridge show jumper and producer, Sarah Kirkpartrick who was first into the arena showed her versatility by taking the honours in the class with Rocky 2, the pair breaking the beam in a time of 80.04 seconds. Another show jumper and producer, this time Conrad Mc Guinness from Carlingford gave it a great try and was only marginally slower on his own Robbie to stop the clock on 81.94 seconds. Charlotte Eakins slotted into third place in this very exciting class with Grennan Lady, 84.89 seconds was the time they finished on. Fourth in the class was Sophie Kinghan a with Rocky, fifth place went to local girl Jessica Finnegan with Sunday Cruise while sixth place was claimed by Lyndsey Acheson and Chelsea.

Classy, ridden by Ciara Collins took the top spot in the 90cm class breaking the beam in a time of 45.19 seconds. Alvin Mc Elwaine from Carrickmacross came home second on Mivvie in a time of 48.69 seconds while Karen O’ Hare slotted into third place in the class on her own Skylark, the time 49.13 seconds. Fourth place went to Newry rider Joe Haffey with John L, while fifth place went to Victoria Mc Elwaine with Pandora D. Kathryn King and Gina were successful in the 1m class, taking the red rosette in a time of 40.77 seconds while Kerrie Mc Kenzie with Alfie slotted into second, stopping the clock on 44.79 seconds while Dermot Mc Elaney from Letterkenny Co. Donegal filled third place with Endeavour, the time 49.55. Mc Elaney had travelled a long distance to compete at Ravensdale Lodge and he had brought a lorry load of horses to jump at the show for his efforts. Finishing third in the previous class and just missing out on places in other classes, Dermot saved the best until last and made the drive back to Donegal less arduous by winning the 1.10m class with Sally, the combination stopping the clock in a time of 45.11 seconds, second in the class was Laura King with Max who stopped the clock on 50.87.

It was a great end to the competition season at Ravensdale Lodge, all winning or placed combinations went home happy with fantastic prizes from sponsors Horse First, Horseware Ireland, Mackins Horse Feeds, Botanica International and O’ Reillys Wholesalers Newry and everyone else went home happy after a great day of competition & fun. The management and staff of Ravensdale Lodge would like to thank all their generous sponsors and everyone who has competed during the year at the centre. They would also like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone again in 2013.
